Softball Faces MAC/ Big Ten Opponents On Second Day Of IU ClassicBLOOMINGTON, IN - The University at Buffalo softball team continued action at the rain-plagued IU Classic hosted by the Indiana University Hoosiers on Saturday. Facing Mid-American Conference foe Eastern Michigan in a game originally scheduled for yesterday afternoon, the Bulls came up short, falling to the Eagles 8-6. In the second of two on the day, Buffalo lost to Indiana 4-0.
In the first game of the day, the Bulls got off to a sturdy start, cutting into the Eagles for three in the top of the first. Leadoff batter Marcy Hansen (Claremont, CA) knocked a single to center and advanced to second when Colleen Greene (Cheektowaga, NY/Cleveland Hill) was hit by a pitch. Then, with one Buffalo out, Lacy Schneider (Idyllwild, CA/Hemet) belted a three-run homer to give UB the lead. The Bulls maintained the lead through four until EMU answered with a three-run bottom of the fourth. In the top of the fifth, freshman Katie Ivancich (Dyer, IN/Andrean) hit a one-out single, later advancing to second on a wild pitch. A Hansen grounder advanced Ivancich to third and Greene scored Ivancich with a clutch two-out single to right-center to put Buffalo ahead 4-3. The Eagles scored four in the bottom half of the inning to take a 7-4 lead but the Bulls rallied back in the top of the sixth as Schneider drew a walk and advanced on a Dana Carter (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) single up the middle. Freshman Samantha Gaetano (Rochester, NY/Nazareth Academy) then sent a single to right to score Carter.
After allowing the Eagles to plate one more in the bottom of the sixth, UB made its final push in the top of the seventh, as Greene roped her second homer of the year over the left field fence. Unfortunately, Buffalo was unable to mount further offensive pressure, dropping the 8-6 come from behind win to Eastern Michigan. In the nightcap, UB was hung-up by the Hoosiers 4-0. With a scoreless game through four, Indiana inked four runs in the bottom of the fifth on five hits and was able to hold on for the 4-0 win.
Despite the setback, the Bulls tallied five hits in the contest. Greene ended 1-for-1 with a walk, while Hansen finished 2-for-3. Freshman Liz Hauke (Maine, NY/Seton Catholic) turned in a hit while classmate Ivancich stroked a double. Buffalo now enters bracket play as the No. 4seed, set to face the No. 2 seed University of Illinois-Chicago Flames on Sunday. |
