Rain Washes Away Second Of Two At IUBLOOMINGTON, IN – The University at Buffalo softball team entered day one of its final tournament of the 2007 pre-season on Friday at the Indiana University Classic in Bloomington, IN. Poor weather conditions allowed the Bulls to complete only one of two scheduled games on the day. The University of Illinois-Chicago Flames upended UB 11-1 in five while the Bulls’ match-up against Mid-American Conference foe Eastern Michigan was washed away and rescheduled for Saturday.
In the day’s first and only game, UB faced a tough opponent in the University of Illinois-Chicago. After the Flames torched the Bulls for five runs in the top of the first, Buffalo put one of its own on the board in the bottom half of the inning. Junior Marcy Hansen (Claremont, CA/Claremont) singled to left field and was then moved to second on a Colleen Greene (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) infield grounder. Sophomore Erin Zilka (Benicia, CA/Benicia) then stepped to the plate and roped a double to leftfield to pick up the only Buffalo RBI of the game.
UIC added six more in the top of the second on five hits to extend its lead over the Bulls by 10. Neither team went on to score in the game, although Buffalo finished with six team hits, including third-inning singles from Greene and Zilka as well as a fourth-inning single from sophomore Dana Carter (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) and a fifth-inning single from freshman Katie Ivancich (Dyer, IN/Andrean).
Freshman Sharon Barr (Coarsegold, CA/Yosemite Union) pitched three strong innings in relief for the Bulls, allowing zero runs and just one hit while striking out one. Buffalo will return to the field on Saturday, scheduled to face Eastern Michigan at 10:00 am followed by 2:00 pm showdown with the host Hoosiers.
