Softball Opens MAC Season With Losses at Ohio

Bulls will finish three-game series on Sunday

ATHENS, OH – The University at Buffalo softball team opened the Mid-American Conference portion of its 2002 schedule with a doubleheader at Ohio University this afternoon. The Bulls dropped two five-inning games to the Bobcats, losing the opener by an 8-0 score and the nightcap by an 11-3 margin. The Bulls (1-7, 0-2 MAC) will finish their three-game series with Ohio (8-11, 2-0 MAC) at 1 pm on Sunday in Athens.

OU pitcher Valerie Wood allowed just two hits – one to sophomore Allison Round (Markham, Ontario/Markham District) and one to freshman Stacey Evans (Collinsville, IL/Triad) – and struck out six to earn the complete-game shutout victory in the opener. The Bobcats got the majority of their offense thanks to a two-run home run in the first inning and a three-run homer in the third inning. Sophomore Heather Robbins (West Bloomfield, MI/West Bloomfield) took the loss on the mound for the Bulls despite allowing just two earned runs.

Buffalo jumped out to an early lead in game two on a three-run home run by sophomore Breanne Nasti (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin), her second homer of the season. The Bobcats answered back with one run in the second, three runs in the third and seven runs in the fifth, taking the lead for good on a sacrifice fly by Jennifer Tisevich. Freshman Melissa Pace (Long Beach, CA/Millikan) was 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored and freshman Ann Marie Magur (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott/Connecticut) was 2-for-2 with a double for the Bulls, while Evans took the loss on the mound.

After Sunday’s single game at OU, the Bulls will return home to play a doubleheader at Canisius on Monday, March 25 before hosting Marshall in a three-game series on Friday and Saturday, March 29 and 30.
