Softball Begins First MAC Season

Bulls Drop Doubleheader to Kent State, Will Play Single Game Tomorrow

BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo softball team began its first Mid-American Conference season this afternoon, dropping both ends of a doubleheader at Kent State, 1-0 and 4-1.

In the opener, the Golden Flashes scored the only run of the game in the bottom of the first inning and were able to hold on for the victory by limiting the Bulls to just two hits. Sophomore Jennifer Moore (Williamsville, NY/Delhi (Ont.) District) and senior Kim Lawrence (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) each recorded a single in the loss, and sophomore Andrea Sage (Depew, NY/Depew) took the loss on the mound despite giving up no earned runs and striking out four.

In the nightcap, Kent State put two runs across the plate in the third and fifth innings, and Moore drove in freshman Breanne Nasti (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) with Buffalo's lone run of the game in the fourth inning. Moore was 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Nasti was 2-for-2 with a double, her 11th of the season, and one run scored to lead the Buffalo attack. Freshman Heather Robbins (West Bloomfield, MI/West Bloomfield) struck out four while going the distance on the mound.

The Bulls (3-19, 0-2 MAC) will play a single game against the Golden Flashes tomorrow, Saturday, March 24, at 1 pm. Buffalo's first home game of the 2001 season is on Friday, March 30 at 3 pm against Ohio.
