Bulls Swept in Winthrop Classic The Bulls found no southern hospitality during their weekend trip to the Winthrop Classic in Rock Hill, South Carolina. UB dropped all four of its contests during the tournament and now stands at 4-12 overall. In the first game of the tourney, the Bulls ran into 1999 Women's World Series participant Southern Mississippi losing to the Golden Eagles 15-0. Southern Mississippi went on to win the tournament with seven wins including five straight shutouts. The Golden Eagles scored all 15 of their runs in the first two innings. The game was called after 4 1/2 innings. UB then continued pool play with losses to Dayton (20-3) and tourney host Winthrop (6-2). The Bulls then moved into the elimination round where they dropped an 11-2 decision to MId-American Conference rival Akron to end the tournament. Against Dayton, the game was close over the first four innings as the Bulls trailed by a 5-3 score with RBIs by Stacee Madden (Corning, NY/East), Kim Sudakow (Utica, NY/Proctor) and Tina Breakell (Schenectady, NY/Guilderland). However the Flyers erupted for 14 runs in the fifth to put the game out of reach. Facing Winthrop in the final game of the pool play, it was another close game as the Bulls trailed 1-0 through six before the Eagles scored five in the last inning. UB rallied for a pair of runs scored by Sudakow and Kim Coon (Belding, MI/Belding) in the bottom of the seventh but got no closer. Breakell had the Bulls' two RBIs in the 10-2 loss to MAC member Akron. Breakell's single in the bottom of the fifth scored Anne Englert (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) and Jessica Kensy (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale).
At the Plate Junior Danielle Haynes (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) and senior Kim Coon (Belding, MI/Belding) are the Bulls' leading hitters. Haynes is hitting a team-high .472 and .568 on base percentage while Coon went 4-of-11 at the Winthrop Classic to give her a .412 season average. Coon is currently riding a three-game hitting streak and has hit safely in four of the last five games. Coon is also hitting an impressive .625 with two outs. Kelly Malone (Waterford, MI/Waterford Kettering) still leads UB in homers (4) and RBIs (12). Stacee Madden (Corning, NY/East) and Tina Breakell (Schenectady, NY/Guilderland) have each driven in eight. The Bulls are hitting .299 on the season and have seen a steady diet of right-handed pitching. UB is yet to face a left-hander this season.
Up Next The Bulls get another taste of
Mid-American Conference play this weekend when they travel
to Akron to face the Zips in a doubleheader. Akron defeated the Bulls 11-2 in the elimination round of
the Winthrop Classic this past Saturday, UB's most
recent game. |
