Softball Ends Bethune-Cookman TournamentDAYTONA BEACH, FL - The University at Buffalo softball team ended the Bethune-Cookman Tournament with losses to Connecticut (1-0) and Fordham (8-0) on Saturday and to UTEP (2-0) on Sunday, giving the Bulls a 1-4 record in the tournament and a 4-17 record overall.
In their second game of the day on Saturday, the Bulls dropped an 8-0 decision to Fordham (7-7) in five innings. The Rams scored twice in the first inning on two bases-loaded singles and then posted another tally in the third on a fielder's choice by Laura Klaiber that drove in Allison Twarowski. Fordham doubled its lead with a three-run fourth inning, scoring once on an RBI-single by Lisa Busciacco, once on a sacrifice fly by Jamie Dautel and once on an RBI-single by Klaiber. Sacrifice flies by Katie Davis and Busciacco in the fifth finished off the Rams' scoring. Fordham pitcher Sara Kinney allowed just three hits and struck out seven in the complete-game shutout. Freshman Kerry Cafazzo (Everett, MA/Everett) had a single to left in the third and a single to center in the fifth, and freshman Laura Kor (Beaverton, OR/Westview) hit an infield single in the first for the Bulls' three hits in the game. Junior Theresa Gugger (Binghamton, NY/Susquehanna Valley/Oneonta State) suffered the loss, allowing nine hits and six earned runs in four innings before being relieved by sophomore Sophie Barstad (Canby, OR/Canby) in the fifth. On Sunday, the Bulls concluded the tournament with a 2-0 loss to UTEP. The Miners (12-20) scored both of their runs in the top of the fifth inning on a two-out, two-run home run to center field by Sarah Ramirez. After stranding one runner on base in the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings, the Bulls loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh on back-to-back singles by senior Melissa Pace (Long Beach, CA/Millikan) and junior Lauren Picciano (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) and a walk by freshman Lacy Schneider (Idyllwild, CA/Hemet). UTEP pitcher Megan Barber got out of the jam by forcing a fly ball to end the game and preserve her shutout. Barber allowed just four hits and struck out seven in the complete game, while Barstad also allowed just four hits and struck out four in the loss. The Bulls now open Mid-American Conference play with a three-game series at Marshall on Friday
and Saturday. |
