Softball Completes 10-Day Tour Of Florida

The University at Buffalo softball team closed the door on a 10-day trip to Florida. The Bulls took on top ranked competition in both the FSU Invitational in Tallahassee and the Speedline Tournament in Tampa. Taking on both nationally-ranked Georgia and Southern Illinois, Buffalo finished 0-5 at the FSU Invite and completed the Speedline Tournament 1-3, with the win coming against Boston University on Saturday, March 17.

Bulls Leash Terriers

Against a pesky Boston University squad, UB fought a scoreless stalemate through the first five innings. Eventually, the Bulls unleashed at the plate, as freshman Sharon Barr (Coarsegold, CA/Yosemite Union) ripped a shot past the diving Boston University centerfielder to wind up on third base. Lacy Schneider (Idyllwild, CA/Hemet) then stepped to the plate and roped a single through the left side to score Barr, picking up what would be the game-winning RBI.

Although Sharon Barr was credited with Saturday’s win against BU on the mound, the victory was ultimately a complete effort from the Bulls’ bullpen, as junior Margo Schramm (Phoenix, AZ/Catalina Foothills/Iowa Lakes CC) got the start, throwing 2 innings, giving up just one hit and striking out one. Sophomore southpaw Dana Carter (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South),/i> took over in the third, throwing three no-hit innings and Barr closed out the game, firing the final two innings and striking out one.

In the Speedline Tournament in Tampa, infielder Lacy Schneider was excellent at the plate going 6-for-11 with a .545 batting average in the team’s four games. Schneider finished the weekend with her first two homers of the season, both against Princeton on Saturday, March 17 and also picked up four RBIs on the weekend.

Next Up The Bulls will compete in their final pre-season tournament before the Mid-American Conference season begins on Friday, March 30. Buffalo will travel to the Indiana University Classic, hosted by Big Ten opponent Indiana. The Bulls are set to face Illinois-Chicago and Mid-American Conference opponent Eastern Michigan on Friday, March 23. On Saturday, UB will enjoy a rematch against Indiana, a team Buffalo fell to in Tampa, 10-1.
