Buffalo earned a third-place finish at the Ohio State Buckeye Invitational in Columbus, OH over the weekend after posting a 1-4 record in the tournament. The Bulls opened the tournament with a 6-0 loss to host Ohio State, with sophomore Jennifer Moore (Williamsville, NY/Delhi (Ont.) District) accounting for Buffalo's only hit of the game, a single in the top of the sixth inning. Buffalo then dropped a 9-7 decision to Cleveland State after coming back to tie the score at 7-7 in the sixth inning. Freshman Breanne Nasti (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) led the Buffalo attack with a triple and two RBIs, and sophomore Kelly Malone (Waterford, MI/Waterford Kettering) hit her first home run of the season. Senior Kim Lawrence (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) had two hits and scored three runs in the loss. The Bulls lost their third game of the tournament to IUPUI, 9-0, with Moore, Laura Gilcrist (Getzville, NY/Williamsville North) and Lisa Cox (Getzville, NY/Williamsville North) each recording a single. In their semifinal matchup, the Bulls lost to Ohio State again, this time by a 9-1 score. Freshman Allison Round (Markham, Ontario/Markham District) hit a double and Malone knocked in Buffalo's only run of the game in the top of the second inning to get the Bulls out to a 1-0 lead. The Buckeyes, however, countered with 11 hits and nine runs during the remainder of the game to advance to the championship. Buffalo faced IUPUI in the consolation game and came away with a third-place finish in the tournament thanks to a 13-2 win. Nasti turned in a 4-for-5 performance with three doubles, a home run and nine RBIs, and senior Stacee Madden (Corning, NY/Corning East) was 2-for-3 from the plate with three runs scored. Freshman Heather Robbins (West Bloomfield, MI/West Bloomfield) earned her second win of the year on the mound.
NASTI, MOORE NAMED TO ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM
Sophomore Jennifer Moore (Williamsville, NY/Delhi (Ont.) District) and freshman Breanne Nasti (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) were both named to the Ohio State Buckeye Invitational All-Tournament Team at the conclusion of the weekend's games. Moore was 4-for-14 with two runs scored in the tournament. She accounted for Buffalo's only hit in a 6-0 shutout at the hands of Ohio State, and she was 2-for-4 with two runs scored against IUPUI in the consolation final. Nasti led the Bulls with a 4-for-5 performance and nine RBIs in their 13-2 win over IUPUI in the consolation final. Of her four hits, three were doubles and one was a home run, her seventh of the season. Nasti also had a triple and two RBIs in UB's 9-7 loss to Cleveland State. Her seven home runs on the year are a UB single-season record and they tie sophomore Kelly Malone (Waterford, MI/Waterford Kettering) for the UB record for career home runs. Malone had six round-trippers as a freshman and picked up her first of this year against Cleveland State. Nasti has also set a UB single-season record for RBIs, having driven in 28 runs in Buffalo's first 20 games of the year.
