Softball Concludes Competition at Speedline TournamentTAMPA, FL – The University at Buffalo softball team took on Rhode Island in the elimination round of the Speedline Tournament, hosted by the University of South Florida. Despite a handful of solid performances, the Bulls ultimately fell to the Rams 7-4 in nine innings.
Buffalo got off to a strong start, taking two from URI in the bottom of the first. Junior Marcy Hansen (Claremont, CA.Claremont) opened the game with a double to left field and Colleen Greene (Cheektowaga, NY/Cleveland Hill) followed with her first homer of the season, a laser over the left field fence to set give the Bulls the initial 2-0 lead. The score would remain, until the top of both the fifth and sixth innings, when Rhode Island chipped away at the Buffalo lead, scoring one in the fifth and another in the sixth on a solo homerun to knot the game at two. After the Rams scored one in the top of the eighth, Buffalo rallied back to tie the game once again. With the International tie-breaker in place, the Bulls began the bottom half of the inning with freshman Samantha Gaetano (Rochester, NY/Nazarath Academy) on second base. Katie Ivancich (Dyer, IN/Andrean) then put down the sacrifice bunt to move Gaetano to third with Hansen picking up the RBI to establish the 6-6 tie.
In the top of the ninth, Rhode Island’s bats came alive, taking the Bulls for four runs on three hits. UB was unable to answer, scoring just one in the bottom half of the inning, as Lacy Schneider (Idyllwild, CA/Hemet) tabbed a RBI single to scored Greene. Greene was the offensive spark for Buffalo, finishing the game 2-for-4 with two RBIs and scoring a duo of runs for the Bulls. Hansen and Schneider also enjoyed strong offensive performances with both ending 2-for-4 with one RBI. Freshman Jaime Sheffler (Chittenango, NY/Chittnenago Central) got her first collegiate hit in the game, a single through the right side in the sixth inning. Classmate Gaetano also picked up a hit in the game.
Buffalo pitcher Dana Carter (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) threw nine solid innings for the Bulls, striking out five and throwing a scoreless game through five. At the plate, Carter finished 1-for-4 with a second inning double to left-center field. Buffalo will next compete in the Indiana University Classic, set to begin on Friday, March 23 in Bloomington.
