Bulls Drop Two At Speedline Invitational

UB gives up a walk-off home run against Elon and falls to UIC??

TAMPA, FL - An Elon three-run walk-off home run sent the Phoenix past Buffalo, 5-4, Saturday night at the Speedline Invitational in Tampa, FL. The Bulls fell earlier in the day to Illinois-Chicago, 2-0.

UB got two solid pitching performances as junior Sophie Barstad (Canby, OR/Canby) pitched a complete game against UIC. The Flames, however, hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth, the only two runs scored in the contest.

The Bulls were only able to record two hits in the contest, one by Barstad and one by Kerry Cafazzo (Everett, MA/Everett). UB had a hard time dealing with the UIC pitching staff as it struck out eight times in the contest.

In the night cap the Bulls looked like they had a victory as they took a 4-1 lead into the seventh inning, but Elon scored a run and then got the three-run shot to win the contest. Barstad hit her fourth home run of the season and Mary Russell (Apalachin, NY/Owego Free Academy) recorded two RBIs in the contest.

Freshman Jennifer Biernacki (Medina, NY/Medina) pitched the complete game for the Bulls and was on the verge of recording her first collegiate win, but fell just short.

UB wraps up the Speedline Invitational tomorrow as it faces George Mason. With a UB victory it will wrap up the tournament with one more game against an opponent to be determined. After this tournament the Bulls will have their first game up north, as they travel to cross-town rival Canisius on March 22.
