Lisa Wheat and Lauren Picciano each drove in a run in 2-0 win over Elon

DAYTONA BEACH, FL - The University at Buffalo softball team opened the three-day Bethune-Cookman Tournament today with a split, losing to the host Wildcats by a 4-0 score before rebounding for a 2-0 win over Elon.

Andrea Thompson hit a two-out double in the bottom of the first inning that was followed by an RBI-single by Sarde Stewart that gave the Lady 'Cats an early 1-0 lead. Bethune-Cookman scored once again in the bottom of the third on an RBI-single by Tiffany Bowser that drove in Capree Williams. A double by Christina Trimble drove in two more insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth to give the Wildcats the 4-0 win. Freshman Laura Kor (Beaverton, OR/Westview) doubled to lead off the sixth inning, and junior Lisa Wheat (Olympia, WA/Tumwater) had a pinch-hit single to lead off the seventh for the Bulls' only two hits in the game. Pitcher Katie Finn earned the complete-game victory for Bethune-Cookman. After Wheat's single to lead off the seventh, Finn struck out her third batter of the game and then threw a double play ball to preserve the shutout. Buffalo sophomore Sophie Barstad (Canby, OR/Canby) allowed 10 hits and three earned runs while striking out two in the complete-game loss.

In their second game of the day, the Bulls rebounded for a 2-0 win over Elon. A squeeze bunt by Wheat drove in sophomore Mary Russell (Apalachin, NY/Owego Free Academy) with the first run of the game in the second inning. Russell led off the inning with a double to left field. Senior Julie Hibner (Salem, OR/South Salem) then drew a two-out walk in the fourth and came around to score on a single to right by junior Lauren Picciano (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) for an insurance tally. Wheat and Picciano both finished with two hits in the game, and senior Stacey Evans (Collinsville, IL/Triad) earned the win on the mound, allowing just five hits and striking out three in the complete game.

The Bulls (4-14) will take on Connecticut at 9 am and Fordham at 1 pm on Saturday.
