Bulls Tornado Through Kansas

The University at Buffalo softball team capped off its 10-day spring break trip with a trio of games at the Kansas Invitational, hosted by the University of Kansas in Lawrence, KS. The Bulls faced the Big 12’s Kansas and Louisiana Tech of the WAC.

Day 1: Recap

UB opened-up action in Kansas with a doubleheader vs. the Jayhawks. The Bulls came up short in both stanzas, falling 9-0 in the opener while suffering a 12-5 setback in the nightcap.

Day 2: Recap

Day two was washed away, as chilly temperatures and freezing rain made Arrocha Ballpark - the Jayhawks’ state of the art facility- nearly impossible to play on.

Day 3: Recap

On the final day of competition and after numerous delays due to cold temperatures, the Bulls were upended by Louisiana Tech 8-0.

Slammin’ Sharon Barr

Sophomore pitcher Sharon Barr (Coarsegold, CA/Yosemite Union) had a career weekend at the plate for the Bulls as the multi-talanted Barr finished the Kansas Invitational with an .875 batting average (7-for-8). Barr’s seven hits included two doubles, a slugging percentage of 1.125% and one stolen base.

In addition, Barr finished the weekend with two RBIs and an impressive .875 on base percentage.

Running Wild

Senior Mary Russell (Apalachin, NY/Owego) added another stolen base to her early season tally of seven in 2008. Russell has been successful in seven stolen base attempts out of eight in the Bulls’ preseason and is on pace to extend her career total as well as her single season total.

Russell already holds UB’s career record in stolen bases (54) and single-season record in stolen bases (15).

Next Up

The Kansas Invitational was the last pre-season action that Buffalo will see, as the Bulls are off until the team’s home MAC opener against Toledo on March 28. The doubleheader vs. the Rockets is scheduled to start at 1:00 pm on Nan Harvey Field.

To complete the opening weekend of league play, UB will host Bowling Green in single games on Saturday, March 29 and Sunday, March 30. Saturday’s game is set for 2:00 pm while Sunday’s contest will begin at 1:00 pm.
