Softball Stymies Boston University, 1-0TAMPA, FL – The University at Buffalo softball team earned its first victory of a 10-day road trip to the Sunshine state on Saturday morning, defeating Boston University 1-0 in the second day of competition at the USF Speedline Invitational.
The Bulls finished the day with a split, later falling to Princeton 7-2. Junior Lacy Schneider (Idyllwild, CA/Hemet) had a career day offensively, finishing 4-for-6 on the day with a pair of homeruns, her first two of the season. Fighting a scoreless stalemate through the first five innings, the Bulls unleashed at the plate, as freshman Sharon Barr (Coarsegold, CA/Yosemite Union) ripped a shot past the diving Boston University centerfielder to wind up on third base. Schneider then stepped to the plate and roped a single through the left side to score Barr, picking up what would be the game-winning RBI. Barr finished with 2-for-3 in the contest, while sophomore Erin Zilka (Benicia, CA/Benicia), freshman Samantha Gaetano (Rochester, NY/Nazarath Academy) and Schneider all finished with one hit each.
Although Barr was credited with the win on the mound, the victory was ultimately a complete effort from the Bulls’ bullpen, as Margo Schramm (Phoenix, AZ/Catalina Foothills/Iowa Lakes CC) got the start, throwing 2 innings, giving up just one hit and striking out one. Sophomore southpaw Dana Carter (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) took over in the third, throwing three no-hit innings and Barr closed out the game, firing the final two innings and striking out one. In the team’s second game of the day, Buffalo was upended 7-2 by a pesky Princeton squad. After the Tigers scored three in the top of the third, the Bulls mounted a comeback, as Schneider stroked her first homerun of the season over the leftfield fence. UB scored another run in the bottom of the fourth when Schneider sent another ball over the left field fence to close in on Princeton’s lead. Despite the comeback, the Tigers erupted for four runs in the top of the sixth, which was good enough to hold for the 7-2 Princeton win.
With the setback, Buffalo still managed to compile five hits as a team, led by Schneider's two homers and one single. Freshman Gaetano threw in a single and classmate Liz Hauke (Maine, NY/Seton Catholic) chipped in with a hit of her own. With Pool play completed, the 2007 USF Speedline Invite will continue Sunday with a single-elimination format, situating Buffalo set to face an opponent to be determined.
