Bulls Battle Weather In Florida

Lengthily rain delay hinders softball against Indiana

TAMPA, FL – The University at Buffalo softball team took on more than just Indiana University in its opening game of the 2007 Speedline Invitational in Tampa, FL on Friday.

The Bulls battled a six hour rain delay, ultimately falling to the Hoosiers 10-1. Buffalo got on the scoreboard first, inking a run in the top of the first. Junior shortstop Marcy Hansen (Claremont, CA/Claremont) opened the game with a single. Hansen was then moved over by Colleen Greene’s (Cheektowaga, NY/Cleveland Hill) sacrifice bunt, later scoring on freshman Sharon Barr’s (Coarsegold, CA/Yosemite Union) RBI single to through the left side.

Indiana tied the score in the bottom half of the inning, and with one out and IU runners on second and third, the skies opened up and the lengthily rain delay set in.

When the two teams returned to the field about six hours later, the Hoosiers displayed their offensive prowess, breaking the tie game in the bottom of the third and throwing one on the board. Indiana then added to its lead in the bottom of the fourth, tallying five and later scoring two more in the bottom of the fifth.

Barr finished a perfect 2-for-2 with two singles and the lone Buffalo RBI while Hansen finished with one hit and freshman Liz Hauke (Maine, NY/Seton Catholic) finished 1-for-2 in the game with a hard-hit single to lead-off the top of the fifth.

Competition in Tampa will continue tomorrow, with the Bulls scheduled to take on Boston University at 10:00 am in a game originally scheduled for today. UB will then play Princeton at noon with the single-elimination round scheduled to commence on Sunday.
