Softball Takes On Terriers In Mid-Week Doubleheader

Bulls prepare for Speedline Invite with games against Boston University

CLEARWATER, FL – The University at Buffalo softball team used a mid-week doubleheader against the Boston University Terriers as a refresher prior to tomorrow’s opening day of the Speedline Invitational, hosted by the University of Southern Florida.

The Bulls fell to the Terriers 9-0 in the first game and were upended in the nightcap, 7-0.

In the first game of the day, Buffalo was unable to get the offensive ball rolling, held to two hits in the game. Senior Colleen Greene (Cheektowaga, NY/Cleveland Hill) leadoff the contest with an infield single while freshman Samantha Gaetano (Rochester, NY/Nazarath Academy) legged-out a bunt to begin the top of the fifth and followed with her seventh stolen base of the early season.

In the day’s second game, UB was no-hit by the Terriers. A bright spot emerged on the mound for the Bulls, however, as junior pitcher Margo Schramm (Phoenix, AZ/Catalina Foothills/Iowa Lakes CC) took over in the pitchers circle in the top of the seventh, sitting down the Boston University batters in order, while striking out one.

UB will get its chance for redemption tomorrow, as the Bulls are scheduled to face the Terriers again in pool play of the Speed line Invitational, hosted by the University of Southern Florida in Tampa. Before the UB-BU rematch at noon, Buffalo will play Indiana University at 10:00 am.

Heading into the weekend’s tournament, UB is guided on the offensive side by sophomore Erin Zilka (Benicia, CA/Benicia). Through the team’s first 18 games of 2007, Zilka is batting .295 with 13 hits, eight RBIs, two doubles and two homeruns. Classmate Dana Carter (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) is also off to a solid start in the batters box, turning in a .255 batting average with 12 hits, a duo of doubles and one triple. Freshman Sharon Barr (Coarsegold, CA/Yosemite Union) leads the team in RBIs with 12, including 10 hits—five of them doubles.

The 2007 Speedline Invitational is comprised of 16 teams including Mid-American Conference foes Ball State, Kent State and Bowling Green.
