Bulls Defeat Big 4 Rival Canisius

In the early contest, freshman Erin Zilka (Benicia, CA/Benicia) and sophomore Kerry Cafazzo (Everett,MA/Everett) both had good games for Buffalo, recording two and three RBIs respectively.

Fordham jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, but in the bottom of the second Zilka hit her third home run of the season, a solo shot, to put the Bulls on the board. The Rams scored five in the fourth inning to take a 9-1 lead, but Buffalo fought back with four runs in the bottom of the fifth. Zilka doubled to left field, plating Colleen Greene (Cheektowaga, NY/Cleveland Hill) from third base. With the bases loaded and two outs, Greene then got the biggest hit of her career, a bases clearing double, giving her a career-high three RBIs in the game. Fordham added six runs in the sixth inning.

Margo Schramm (Phoenix, AZ/Catalina Foothills/Iowa Lakes CC) is still searching for the first win of her UB career as she picked up the loss in the contest. Rachel Wiggins picked up the victory for Fordham.

The Bulls found their offensive power in the second game as junior Sophie Barstad (Canby, OR/Canby) recorded four RBIs as well as the complete game, shutout win for Buffalo.

UB scored five runs in the first inning as the Bulls loaded the bases for Barstad. The junior pitcher singled to center field, scoring Zilka and sophomore Marcy Hansen (Claremont, CA/Claremont). Cafazzo then picked up her fourth RBI on the day as she scored Lisa Wheat (Olympia, WA/Tumwater) on a fielder's choice. Barstad and Cafazzo would later score themselves on a pair of Canisius fielding errors.

The Bulls scored another three runs in the third inning as Lacy Schneider (Idyllwild, CA/Hemet) began the inning with a single. She was replaced by pinch runner Jennifer Biernacki (Medina, NY/Medina) who was caught stealing. Freshman Ashley Kanavy (Syracuse, NY/Westhill) recorded her first career hit, a single to left field. The Bulls ultimately would load the bases with two outs and Barstad delivered again, hitting another two-run single to center field. UB got its eighth run of the game as Hansen scored on an illegal pitch.

UB remains at South Florida for one more tournament this weekend as it competes at the USF Speedline Tournament with 15 other schools from across the nation. On Friday the Bulls face Dartmouth at 4:00 pm and then a rematch against Fordham at 6:30 pm.
