Bulls Struggle At Spring Break ClassicTAMPA, FL - The University at Buffalo softball team dropped its first two games at the USF Spring Break Classic on Tuesday. The Bulls fell to Northern Illinois and then came up short against the host school, South Florida.
The Bulls got off to a tough start in the morning game as Northern Illinois' Taryn Hagemann threw a five inning no-hitter against Buffalo. The Huskies defeated the Bulls, 9-0, in a non-conference game between the two MAC schools. NIU scored seven runs in the first inning on just three hits as Buffalo starter Margo Schramm (Phoenix, AZ/Catalina Foothills/Iowa Lakes CC) had a tough time finding the plate. The first three runs were scored on two walks and a hit by pitch, all with the bases loaded. The other four runs were scored on two more walks, a single and a UB error. The Bulls managed to get runners on base in the second inning via an error, the third inning on a walk and in the fifth inning on a hit by pitch. NIU scored two more runs in the fourth inning against freshman Jennifer Biernacki (Medina, NY/Medina).
In the second game UB fell to South Florida, 6-3. Buffalo got off to an early lead in the game, scoring two runs in the first inning. Mary Russell (Apalachin, NY/Owego Free Academy) led the game off with a double to left center and was moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. Sophomore Laura Kor (Beaverton, OR/Westview) singled up the middle, scoring Russell from third base. Later in the inning the Bulls loaded the bases with two outs and freshman Dana Carter (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) singled to left field to drive in the second UB run. South Florida got one back in the bottom of the first, but Buffalo regained its two run lead in the third. Carter came to the plate, again with the bases loaded, and hit a sacrifice fly to center field, plating Kor from third. However, South Florida scored three runs in the bottom of that inning and scored one more run in the fourth and sixth, respectively. Junior Sophie Barstad (Canby, OR/Canby) picked up the loss despite pitching the entire game for UB. Buffalo will be back in action tomorrow for a pair of morning contests. UB faces Fordham at 9:00 am and then faces local rival Canisius at 11:00 am. |
