Bulls Fall to Southern Utah, 3-0

Bulls' final game at San Jose State Invitational cancelled

SAN JOSE, CA - The University at Buffalo softball team dropped a 3-0 decision to Southern Utah this afternoon at the San Jose State Invitational. The Bulls outhit the Thunderbirds by a 7-5 margin, including two hits by junior Allison Round (Markham, Ontario/Markham District), but they stranded seven runners on base in the game, three in the sixth inning. The loss drops Buffalo's record to 6-8 overall.

Southern Utah broke open the game with a two-hit, three-run fifth inning. A two-out double with bases loaded by Anna Leeman drove home all three runs, and the Thunderbirds shut the Bulls down for the remainder of the game to earn the shutout victory. Buffalo threatened in the sixth inning when junior Marce Ross (Innisfil, Ontario/St. Peter's) led off with a triple to right field. Junior Breanne Nasti (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) then reached on an error by left fielder April Cox, but Cox recovered to throw Ross out at home for the first out of the inning. Nasti was later forced out at home on a fielder's choice, and pitcher Tracy Evans-Jones got sophomore Julie Hibner (Salem, OR/South Salem) to ground out to third base to end the inning. Evans-Jones pitched the complete game for the Thunderbirds, while sophomore Stacey Evans (Collinsville, IL/Triad) went the distance for the Bulls, striking out four in the loss.

The Bulls were scheduled to play Southern Utah once more on Saturday, March 15 to close out the San Jose State Invitational, but that game was cancelled due to rain and poor field conditions. Buffalo now opens Mid-American Conference play with a three-game series at Marshall on Saturday, March 22 and Sunday, March 23.
