Bulls Drop Doubleheader at San Jose State
Buffalo opened the scoring in game one with a four-hit, three-run fourth inning. Freshman Lauren Picciano (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) stretched a slap bunt down the third base line into a double, and she later crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly to right field by senior Kelly Malone (Waterford, MI/Waterford Kettering). Singles by Magur and sophomore Julie Hibner (Salem, OR/South Salem) also drove in runs during the inning, putting the Bulls up by a 3-0 score. The Spartans got two runs back in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run single by Heather Lopez, and they tied the score in the fifth on an RBI-single by Jana Arde. Miranda Gonzales then singled in the game-winning run in the eighth inning to give SJSU the come-from-behind win. Sophomore Stacey Evans (Collinsville, IL/Triad) suffered the loss on the mound, giving up eight hits and three earned runs while striking out two. Carol Forbes pitched the final 3.2 innings for the Spartans, giving up just one hit and striking out two to earn the win. San Jose State scored one run in the third and three runs in the fourth to take a commanding 4-0 lead in game two. The Bulls, acting as the home team for game two, scored their lone run in the bottom of the seventh inning when Hibner singled to right center and then scored on a two-out single by Magur. Sophomore Erica Pace (Long Beach, CA/Millikan) had reached on a walk before Magur's hit, and junior Dominique Jones (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-DeWitt) followed with a single to left center that loaded the bases. Courtney Lewis came on in relief with junior Breanne Nasti (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) at the plate, and SJSU center fielder Becca Baldridge tracked down Nasti's deep fly ball to leave the three runners stranded on base and end the game. Kelli McCollister was credited with the win on the mound for the Spartans, allowing just five hits and striking out nine. Junior Heather Robbins (West Bloomfield, MI/West Bloomfield) suffered her first loss of the year on the mound for the Bulls. She allowed nine hits and four earned runs in five innings. The San Jose State Invitational was originally scheduled for Friday and Saturday, March 14
and 15, but the Bulls and the Spartans got two games in this afternoon due to the forecast of rain over
the next two days in the San Jose area. The Bulls (6-7) are now scheduled to play Southern Utah at 2 pm Eastern time on Friday, March 14. |
