Softball Weekly ReleaseNASTI NAMED MAC EAST PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Freshman Breanne Nasti (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) became the first player in UB softball history to be named Mid-American Conference East Player of the Week when she received the honor for the first week of the 2001 softball season, as announced by the conference office on Monday, March 12. The first award of the season included games through Sunday, March 4, during which Nasti hit .452 (14-for-31) with five doubles and four home runs. In Buffalo's nine games, she scored seven runs and drove in 13. Nasti hit .650 (13-for-20) in six games at the Sam Houston State Invitational with five doubles, three home runs and 11 RBIs. In a 12-1 win over Texas Southern on February 9, she was 4-for-4 with two doubles, two home runs and seven RBIs.
BULLS PARTICIPATE IN CREIGHTON CLASSIC
The Bulls (2-13) participated in the Creighton Spring Classic from Friday, March 9 to Saturday, March 10 where they lost games to Creighton (1-0), Drake (2-1), Missouri-Kansas City (7-6), Minnesota (8-1) and 17th-ranked Nebraska (5-0). The tournament was moved from Omaha, NE to Kansas City, MO due to weather. In the loss to UMKC, the Bulls fought back with six runs in the final three innings after falling behind by a 7-0 score. Freshman Breanne Nasti (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) hit a home run while leading the attack with a 2-for-2 performance from the plate with two RBIs. Sophomore Jessica Kensy (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) and freshman Marce Ross (Barrie, Ontario/St. Peter's) also drove in two runs apiece. Buffalo finished the game with nine hits compared to UMKC's eight.
BULLS LOSE SINGLE GAME TO UMKC
Before returning home from its spring break trip, Buffalo got in one game with UMKC after having a scheduled doubleheader with the Kangaroos postponed on Wednesday due to bad weather. UMKC got out to an early 1-0 lead after the first inning and then scored a needed insurance run in the bottom of the fourth inning. In Buffalo's sixth inning, freshman Heather Robbins (West Bloomfield, MI/West Bloomfield) doubled to left field and then crossed the plate on a double by freshman Breanne Nasti (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin), but that would be the only run the Bulls would get in a 2-1 loss.
BULLS LOSING THE CLOSE ONES
The Bulls' 2-13 record this season doesn't reflect the close margin of defeat they have endured on numerous occasions. Of their 13 losses to date, seven of them have been by one run, including four of their six games over the weekend.
UP NEXT
Buffalo (2-13) will participate in the Ohio State Invitational from Friday, March 16 to Saturday, March 17 before beginning its first season of Mid-American Conference play at Kent State on Friday, March 23. Buffalo's first home game is scheduled for Friday, March 30 against Ohio.
