Softball Returns From Spring Trip to Kansas CityBUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo softball team returned from a spring break trip to Kansas City, MO where it competed in the Creighton University Spring Classic from Friday, March 9 to Saturday, March 10 and played a single game against the University of Missouri-Kansas City on Sunday, March 11. Weather forced the Creighton Spring Classic to be moved from Omaha, NE to Kansas City, MO, and the Bulls lost games to Creighton, Drake, UMKC, Minnesota and 17th-ranked Nebraska. Buffalo dropped its first game of the tournament to host Creighton by a 1-0 score as the Bluejays scored the game's only run in the bottom of the fourth inning on an error by catcher Kim Lawrence (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg). Senior Stacee Madden (Corning, NY/Corning East) picked up Buffalo's only hit in the game. Buffalo followed that game with another one-run loss, this time to Drake. After the Bulldogs scored an unearned run in the bottom of the first inning, freshman Breanne Nasti (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) homered in the top of the second inning to knot the score at 1-1, but Drake put one more run across the plate in the fourth inning to earn the 2-1 victory. Buffalo concluded the first day of competition with a 7-6 loss to UMKC. After the Kangaroos jumped out to a 7-0 lead after their half of the fifth inning, the Bulls fought back but could only score six runs in the final three innings. Nasti hit another home run while leading the attack with a 2-for-2 performance from the plate with two RBIs. Sophomore Jessica Kensy (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) and freshman Marce Ross (Barrie, Ontario/St. Peter's) also drove in two runs apiece. Buffalo finished the game with nine hits compared to UMKC's eight. On the final day of the tournament, the Bulls dropped games to Minnesota, 8-1, and to No. 17 Nebraska, 5-0. Before returning home, Buffalo got in one game with UMKC after having a scheduled doubleheader with the Kangaroos postponed on Wednesday due to bad weather. UMKC got out to an early 1-0 lead after the first inning and then scored a needed insurance run in the bottom of the fourth inning. In Buffalo's sixth inning, freshman Heather Robbins (West Bloomfield, MI/West Bloomfield) doubled to left field and then crossed the plate on a double by Nasti, but that would be the only run the Bulls would get in a 2-1 loss. Buffalo (2-13) will participate in the Ohio State Invitational from Friday, March 16 to
Saturday, March 17 before beginning its first season of Mid-American Conference play at Kent State on
Friday, March 23. |
