Softball Continues Play At FSU Invite

Dana Carter holds nationally-ranked Salukis to three runs

TALLAHASSEE, FL – The University at Buffalo softball team completed day two of action at the FSU Invitational on Saturday. Despite dropping both games of the day, the Bulls’ pitchers had solid outings on the mound against some of the top hitters in the nation.

In the opening game of the day, UB was upended by No. 19/20 Southern Illinois 3-0. Sophomore southpaw Dana Carter (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) held the Saluki hitters to three runs in five innings of work, striking out one and walking one.

In the tight game, the Bulls were guided offensively by junior Marcy Hansen (Claremont, CA/Claremont) who went one-for-two with a walk and two stolen bases. Senior Colleen Greene (Cheektowaga, NY/Cleveland Hill) and junior Lacy Schneider (Idyllwild, CA/Hemet) also tallied a hit in the contest.

In the day’s second match-up, Buffalo faced a pesky Florida A&M team. Despite equaling the Rattlers’ seven hits, the Bulls ultimately dropped the game, 9-7.

Buffalo got on the board early scoring two runs in the top of the first thanks to Schneider’s two-RBI single to left center that scored sophomore Erin Zilka (Benicia, CA/Benicia) and Carter.

The Bulls scored single runs in the next two innings while FAMU hung with UB virtually run-for-run until Buffalo exploded for three runs in the top of the fifth. Carter doubled and Zilka maintained the rally sending a single to right field. Freshman Sharon Barr (Coarsegold, CA/Yosemite Union) then roped a RBI double down the left field line and Schneider followed with a walk. A handful of Rattlers misplays then allowed the Bulls to ink two more to take the lead.

The lead was short-lived though, as FAMU enjoyed a run of its own, tabbing four runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the final 9-7 win.

Carter had an outstanding game at the plate, finishing 2-for-2 with a single, a double, two walks and three runs scored. Barr went the distance for UB on the mound, throwing the complete game and chipping in on the offensive side with a RBI double.

The Bulls are next in action on Sunday with a match-up against Appalachian State. Game time is set for 10:30 am.
