Games In Full Swing at FSU InvitationalTallahassee, FL – The University at Buffalo softball team dug into competition Friday afternoon, facing nationally-ranked Georgia and Western Carolina at the 2007 FSU Invitational hosted by Florida State.
In a strong bracket comprised of: No. 21 Georgia, Western Carolina, Florida A&M and Southern Illinois, the Bulls dropped their first two games of the tournament, upended by the Bulldogs 9-0 and dropping the nightcap to Western Carolina, 8-5. UB will continue pool-play against the remaining two teams on Saturday, with action scheduled to continue into Sunday when the tournament takes on a single-elimination format.
Erin Zilka (Benicia, CA/Benicia) had a stellar day offensively against Georgia, as the sophomore went 2-for-2 from the plate, roping a single in the bottom of the first and later belting a double in the bottom of the fourth inning. Dana Carter (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) made her first appearance on the mound for the blue and white in over a year, entering the game in relief and throwing three innings, striking out one and allowing three earned runs. In the day’s second game, the Bulls took the initial lead, scoring a duo of runs in the bottom of the second. Freshman Katie Ivancich (Dyer, IN/Andrean) slammed a double to start the inning and classmates Jackie Burke (West Seneca, NY/Mt. Mercy Academy) and Samantha Gaetano (Rochester, NY/Nazarath Academy) kept the rally going, with Burke stroking a single and Gaetano drawing a walk and both later coming around to score.
A hot third inning from the Western Carolina bats gave the Catamounts the lead until the bottom of the fourth when Colleen Greene (Cheektowaga, NY/Cleveland Hill) hit a single and Zilka later picked up an RBI to score Greene. A top of the seventh four-run outburst from Western Carolina extended the Catamounts’ lead, however, a late Buffalo comeback served to make the game interesting. A handful of walks and the onset of Western Carolina errors highlighted by a Sharon Barr (Coarsegold, CA/Yosemite Union) single allowed the Bulls to close the lead, ultimately scoring two more. The comeback, however was too little too late, as UB fell to the Catamounts 8-5. The Bulls return to action on Saturday at the FSU Invitational with games scheduled against Southern Illinois and Florida A&M. The first game is scheduled to commence at 11 am.
