Bulls Eliminated at National Invitational Softball Tournament

Buffalo loses consolation games to UNC-Greensboro and Syracuse

SAN JOSE, CA - The University at Buffalo softball team was eliminated from the National Invitational Tournament in San Jose, CA after suffering loses to UNC-Greensboro and Syracuse in the consolation bracket on Saturday.

In their first game of the afternoon, Buffalo was shut out for the third time at the tournament in a 6-0 loss to UNC-Greensboro. The Bulls committed four errors in the game and allowed one run in the first inning, two in the third and fourth innings and one in the fifth. Freshman Stacey Evans (Collinsville, IL/Triad) took the loss on the mound, and freshman Julie Hibner (Salem, OR/South Salem) continued her strong hitting with a walk and a single in three at bats.

In their final game of the tournament, the Bulls dropped a 9-4 decision to Syracuse. The Orangewomen jumped out to an 8-0 lead after four innings of play thanks to a two-run triple in the second inning, a two-run home run in the third inning, and a four-run fourth inning. The Bulls responded with two runs in the fifth and sixth innings, but Syracuse put a final run across the plate in the top of the seventh to secure the win. Junior Jessica Kensy (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) was 2-for-4 from the plate and drove in both UB runs in the fifth inning with a single to center field. Freshman Erica Pace (Long Beach, CA/Millikan) recorded her first career RBI in the sixth inning with a single to drive in sophomore Jessica Labella (Kings Park, NY/Kings Park), and freshman Melissa Pace (Long Beach, CA/Millikan) then drew a bases-loaded walk with two outs for her first career RBI. Both Paces finished 2-for-3 from the plate with one run scored and one RBI. Freshman Ann Marie Magur (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott/Connecticut) and Hibner also had hits in the game.

The Bulls are now off until Saturday, March 23 and Sunday, March 24 when they open the Mid-American Conference season with a three-game series at Ohio.
