Bulls Beat New Mexico State For Third Time

Buffalo finishes Arizona State Triangular with 3-3 record

TEMPE, AZ - The University at Buffalo softball team earned a 4-3 win over New Mexico State and dropped a 10-0 decision to No. 20 Arizona State on the final day of the Arizona State Triangular in Tempe, AZ. The Bulls (6-8) finished the triangular with three wins over the Aggies and three losses to the host Sun Devils.

In the first game of the day, junior Melissa Pace (Long Beach, CA/Millikan) had an RBI-double in the first inning and junior Ann Magur (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott/Connecticut) had an RBI-single in the third inning, and the Bulls led by a 3-0 score until a three-run fifth by the Aggies tied the game. In the sixth, Pace walked and freshman Sophie Barstad (Canby, OR/Canby) followed with a single, and an Aggies error allowed the game-winning run to score. Barstad earned the win on the mound for the Bulls.

Against Arizona State, Sun Devils' pitcher Ashley Werschky came one out away from a no-hitter, but senior Jessica Labella (Kings Park, NY/Kings Park) hit a two-out double in the top of the fifth inning for the Bulls' only hit of the game. Arizona State scored five runs off of three hits in the third inning, including a two-RBI double by Valerie Sevilla and a two-run triple by Phelan Wright. The Sun Devils then scored five more runs in the fourth on a grand slam by Sevilla and a solo home run by Wright. Junior Stacey Evans (Collinsville, IL/Triad) suffered the loss on the mound for the Bulls, allowing nine hits and striking out three.

The Bulls are now off for close to two weeks before participating in the San Diego Classic from Friday, March 19 to Sunday, March 21.
