Softball Shocks No. 25 Baylor, 1-0
Bulls win first game at Malihini Tournament over nationally-ranked Lady Bears
HONOLULU, HI - Sophomore
Stacey Evans (Collinsville, IL/Triad)
pitched a strong game on the mound and senior
Jessica Kensy (Cheektowaga,
NY/Maryvale) drove in the only run of the game,
and that was all the University at Buffalo softball team would need to defeat Baylor, 1-0, in its opening
game of the Malihini Tournament in Honolulu, HI. Baylor (19-9) came in to the game ranked 25th in
the nation in the most recent USA Today/National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Top 25
poll, released on Wednesday, March 5.
 | | Jessica Kensy | Buffalo put the only run of the game across the plate in the top of the second inning when a
two-out single up the middle by Kensy scored sophomore
Ann Magur (Endicott,
NY/Union-Endicott) who had led off the inning with a walk. Evans improved to 4-0 on the season with another strong outing
on the mound. She pitched the complete game, striking out six and allowing just two hits, none through
the first five innings. The Lady Bears threatened in the bottom of the seventh when Kelly Levesque led
off with a walk and Stephanie Pomes doubled down the left field line to put runners at second and third
with no outs. Evans struck out the next two batters and then fielded a grounder by Carrie Leerberg and
threw her out at first to preserve the shutout.
The Bulls (4-2 overall) play UC-Riverside and Kent State on Friday, March 7 at 3 pm and 5
pm Eastern time, respectively.
