Bulls Continue Streak Of SplittingPLANT CITY, FL - Fresh off her 100th career victory, head coach Marie Curran and the Bulls completed another tournament where they split their four games. The Bulls defeated Harvard in the early game before falling to Michigan State, 5-1, in the final game of the tournament. UB is now 4-4 through its first eight games.
The Bulls won their first game not started by junior Sophie Barstad (Canby, OR/Canby) earning a 4-3 victory over Harvard on a complete game by freshman Dana Carter (Williamsville, Ny/Williamsville South). Carter struck out two batters for her first collegiate victory. Sophomore Laura Kor (Beaverton, OR/Westview) drove in three runs, while freshman Erin Zilka (Benicia, CA/Benicia) continued her strong play with her first career home run. Barstad started the second game for Buffalo, but she picked up her first loss of the season as the Bulls couldn't stop the host Spartans. The Bulls got inconsistent play from their defense as errors gave Michigan State extra chances, which the Spartans turned into runs.
UB got its lone run in the fourth inning when, with two outs, Zilka singled to center field, scoring Colleen Greene (Cheektowaga, NY/Cleveland Hill) from second base. Down 4-1 in the bottom of the sixth the Bulls had a chance to get back in the game, but couldn't capitalize on a threat where they had runners on first and second with nobody out. The Bulls will now travel to one of the largest tournaments they will take part in all season, the Adidas Tournament. UB begins play on Thursday, March 9 against Temple at 1 pm. Following the Temple contest, the Bulls will face the Tennessee Lady Vols, currently ranked number three in the nation. That game is scheduled to begin at 4 pm. |
