TEMPE, AZ - The University at Buffalo softball team split its first two games at the Arizona State Triangular tonight, defeating New Mexico State by a 5-3 score in extra innings before losing to the nationally-ranked Sun Devils, 8-0, in the nightcap. Junior Melissa Pace (Long Beach, CA/Millikan) went 3-for-7 with four RBIs on the day, including her first career home run in the bottom of the eighth inning against New Mexico State.

New Mexico State's only hit of the game off of Buffalo pitcher Stacey Evans (Collinsville, IL/Triad) was a three-run home run by Lisette Wilson in the fifth inning that gave the Aggies (2-18) a 3-1 lead. Pace then hit a single that drove in two runs in the sixth to tie the score at 3-3 and force extra innings. Her first career home run came off of pitcher Stephanie Carrasco and went over the wall in left field with two outs in the bottom of the eighth to give the Bulls the win.

Pace had the Bulls' only hit against Arizona State (20-9) in the nightcap. The Sun Devils hit two home runs of off freshman pitcher Sophie Barstad (Canby, OR/Canby) and took the 8-0 win after six innings. Arizona State is currently ranked 20th in the NFCA/USA Today Top 25 poll and 24th in the ESPN.com/USA Softball Top 25 poll.

The Bulls (4-6) face New Mexico State at 3 pm and Arizona State at 7 pm on Saturday, March 6 and New Mexico State at 12 pm and Arizona State at 2 pm on Sunday, March 7.
