Softball Weekly ReleaseBULLS WIN TWO GAMES AT SAM HOUSTON STATE INVITE
The Bulls began their season in Huntsville, TX, participating in the four-team McKenzie's Valentine's Classic on February 9 and 10, hosted by Sam Houston State University. The Bulls posted a 2-4 record in the tournament, including a pair of one-run losses to the host school. After a 2-1 loss to Sam Houston State and a 6-0 loss to Illinois, Buffalo crushed Texas Southern by a 12-1 score. The Bulls jumped out to an early lead with a six-run first inning. Freshman Breanne Nasti (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) had two doubles, two home runs and seven RBIs while going 4-for-4 from the plate, and freshman Allison Round (Markham, Ontario/Markham District) was 2-for-2 with a double and two RBIs. Sophomore Andrea Sage (Depew, NY/Depew) picked up her first win on the mound, allowing just two hits and no earned runs while striking out four batters. The Bulls defeated Texas Southern again in their final game of the tournament, scoring four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to earn a come-from-behind 5-3 victory. Nasti led the Bulls with a 3-for-4 performance from the plate, including two doubles, and Round drove in two runs. Freshman Heather Robbins (West Bloomfield, MI/West Bloomfield) came on in relief and earned her first career win on the mound.
BULLS TAKE ON TOP COMPETITION AT SE MISSOURI CLASSIC
Buffalo posted an 0-3 record at the 2001 Southeast Missouri State Softball Classic, losing to No. 27 Illinois-Chicago, 7-3, to Northern Iowa, 6-0, and to Southwest Missouri State, 5-4 in extra innings. The Bulls were also scheduled to play Western Kentucky and host Southeast Missouri State on Sunday, but all games on the final day of the tournament were rained out. The Bulls put forth a good effort against 27th-ranked Illinois-Chicago in their opening game of the tournament, leading the Flames by a 3-1 score after a three-run fourth inning during which senior Stacee Madden (Corning, NY/Corning East) and sophomore Lisa Cox (Getzville, NY/Williamsville North) each drove in a run. UIC, however, answered back with two runs in the fifth inning and four runs in the sixth to win the game by a 7-3 score. Pitcher Andrea Sage (Depew, NY/Depew) allowed just one earned run while throwing the complete game. The Bulls lost their final game of the tournament in the bottom of the eighth inning to Southwest Missouri State. The Bulls forced extra innings after coming back from a 4-0 deficit and scoring two runs in the sixth and two runs in the seventh innings. Freshmen Breanne Nasti (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) and Heather Robbins (West Bloomfield, MI/West Bloomfield) each hit two-run home runs to tie the score at 4-4, but a SW Missouri State single up the middle scored the winning run in the bottom of the eighth to give the Bears the 5-4 victory.
NASTI, ROUND BEGIN CAREERS STRONG
Freshmen Breanne Nasti (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) and Allison Round (Markham, Ontario/Markham District) have both started their UB careers on a strong note. Nasti has been leading the Bulls so far this season with a .452 batting average, a 1.000 slugging percentage, five doubles, four home runs and 13 RBIs. She hit .650 (13-for-20) in six games at the Sam Houston State Invitational with five doubles, three home runs and 11 RBIs. Nasti was 4-for-4 with two doubles, two home runs and 7 RBIs in a 12-1 win over Texas Southern. Round has a .375 batting average (9-for-24) through the first nine games of the season with one double and four RBIs.
