Bulls Split At Plant City InvitationalPLANT CITY, FL - The University at Buffalo softball team continued its trend of splitting doubleheaders, winning the first game and falling in the second contest. The Bulls won a 9-4 decision over Boston University, but fell in five innings to Illinois State, 11-0.
Junior Sophie Barstad (Canby, OR/Canby) won her third straight decision, pitching a complete game, allowing just two earned runs and striking out six, including the last two batters of the game in the seventh inning. Taking a 5-4 lead into the seventh inning, the Bulls got four insurance runs on hits from Erin Zilka (Benicia, CA/Benicia) and Marcy Hansen (Claremont, CA/Claremont), who both recorded 2 RBIs. Zilka had a three-RBI performance in the contest, while going 3-for-4 against Terrier pitching.
The second game was a different story for Buffalo. Illinois State took advantage of UB pitching, scoring 11 runs in five innings. Freshman Dana Carter (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) made her pitching debut, allowing one run in one inning. In just six games this season, the Bulls have already improved on their record from last year at this point. In 2005, UB was just 1-5 through six games, but this season has an even 3-3 record. Buffalo looks to improve on that record when it wraps up competition at the Plant City Invitational tomorrow. The Bulls meet Harvard at 10 am and then the host Michigan State Spartans at 3 pm. |
