Bulls Compete At Frost Classic

The University at Buffalo softball team participated in the 2008 Frost Classic, hosted by the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga over the weekend. The Bulls finished the nine-team tournament with a 1-3 record.

Rain Washes Away Day One

Day one of the 2008 Frost Classic Softball Tournament was canceled due to rain. Buffalo’s games against Morehead State and Marshall were washed away while much of Saturday’s action was postponed as well. Buffalo’s game with Morehead State was not rescheduled and Saturday’s game schedule was restructured, pitting UB against Marshall in the early game and UB vs. Wright State in the nightcap.

Bulls Beat Marshall, 11-6

UB picked up its first win of the season Friday night, as the Bulls defeated former Mid-American Conference foe Marshall 11-6 in the first game of the Frost Classic.

Buffalo Finishes Weekend 1-3

After downing Marshall in the first game of the Frost Classic, the Bulls went 0-3, falling 9-4 to Wright State in Saturday’s nightcap and suffering two setbacks on Sunday, dropping games to Eastern Illinois and UConn. UB fell to EIU 9-1 and lost to the Huskies 11-3.

Visperas Tossing Rookie Magic

Freshman Stephanie Visperas (Newark, CA/Newark Memorial) picked up her first collegiate win on the mound for UB, throwing the complete game, striking out two. In addition, Visperas helped her own cause, recording a duo of hits.

Outties Hot Offensively

Buffalo outfielders made key contributions offensively in the Bulls’ win over Marshall on Saturday. Senior centerfielder Mary Russell (Apalachin, NY/Owego) belted a two-run homerun and finished the game with four RBIs while sophomore leftfielder Kristen Gallipanni (Brewster, NY/Brewster) finished the contest 2-for-2 with one RBI.

Good Wood Mary Russell put on a hitting clinic in Chattanooga, finishing the weekend 6-for-14, with two homeruns and six RBIs. Russell leads the Bulls with a .276 batting average on the season, starting all nine games so far. Russell also maintains team-highs in hits and RBIs with eight and seven, respectively.

Next Up

Buffalo will face Iowa for the second time this pre-season at the UC-Riverside Tournament on Friday, March 7. The Bulls are then set to play UC-Riverside later in the day followed a Saturday contest vs. Utah Valley State and another game against host UC-Riverside on Sunday.
