CLEVELAND, OH - The University at Buffalo's softball team swept the Mid-American Conference's East Division weekly awards, with sophomore Stacey Evans (Collinsville, IL/Triad) being named Pitcher of the Week and junior Breanne Nasti (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) receiving Player of the Week honors, as announced today by the league office. Evans and Nasti led the Bulls to a share of the tournament title at the Florida International Invitational over the weekend, along with Tennessee. Due to Tennessee's travel schedule, an official championship game was not played. The Lady Volunteers finished the tournament with a 4-1 record, with their only loss coming at the hands of the Bulls, 8-2, on the opening day of the tournament. The Bulls finished the invitational with a 3-2 mark to get the 2003 season off to a strong start. The 3-2 start is Buffalo's best in its short Division I history.

Evans was credited with all three of Buffalo's wins on the mound, pitching three complete games and allowing just one earned run in 21 innings of work for a 0.33 earned run average. Evans struck out 26 batters in the three games, including 11 against Tennessee, just one away from her career high and the UB single-season record of 12. Evans allowed just 18 hits in the three games, and she earned her first shutout of the season with a 2-0 win over FIU in the Bulls' final game of the tournament.

Nasti led the Bulls' offense, going 9-for-17 (.529) with one double, four runs batted in and four runs scored. She was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI against Tennessee and then drove in the first run of the game in the sixth inning of a 2-0 win over FIU in the Bulls' final game of the tournament. She was also perfect from the field with six putouts and one assist in the three games.

The Bulls (3-2) will travel to Hawaii later this week to participate in the Malihini Invitational from Thursday, March 6 through Sunday, March 9. On the way back to Buffalo, they will stop in California for the San Jose State Invitational on Friday, March 14 and Saturday, March 15.
