Bulls Fall to Charleston Southern in Extra Innings

UB softball team played just one game at the CSU Invitational

CHARLESTON, SC - The University at Buffalo softball team got one game in at the Charleston Southern Invitational Softball Tournament on a rainy Sunday afternoon in South Carolina. The Bulls opened the 2002 season with a 7-6 loss to the Lady Buccaneers in nine innings before inclement weather conditions cancelled the remainder of the tournament.

The Bulls jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead after two innings of play thanks to second-inning home runs by junior Kelly Malone (Waterford, MI/Waterford Kettering) and sophomore Breanne Nasti (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin). Charleston Southern scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring the tying run on a double to center field by Ronnatta Adams. The Lady Buccaneers then scored the game-winning run in the ninth inning on an RBI hit by Kristy Ringler. Malone led the Bulls from the plate with two hits in three at-bats and two RBIs.

Buffalo will now travel to San Jose, CA to participate in the National Invitational Softball Tournament. The Bulls will face Arizona State in their first game of the tournament on Friday, March 8 at 3 pm. The Sun Devils were ranked ninth in the nation in the USA Today/NFCA (National Fastpitch Coaches Association) Top 25 poll on Wednesday, February 27. The Bulls will also face Northern Iowa at 5 pm and San Jose State at 9 pm on Friday in pool play. The tournament continues on Saturday and Sunday, March 9 and 10.

Buffalo's Mid-American Conference schedule then begins on Saturday, March 23 at Ohio. The Bulls' first home game of the season is scheduled for Friday, March 29 against Marshall at 2 pm.
