Softball Beats Marshall, 11-6CHATTANOOGA, TN- The University at Buffalo softball team picked up its first win of the season Friday night, as the Bulls defeated former Mid-American Conference foe Marshall 11-6 in the first game of the 2008 Frost Classic, hosted by the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga.
Freshman Stephanie Visperas (Newark, CA/Newark Memorial) picked up her first collegiate win on the mound for UB, throwing the complete game, striking out two. After a scoreless first, the Bulls tacked one on the board in the bottom of the second inning on a Sharon Barr (Coarsegold, CA/Yosemite Union) homer to left center field. Marshall tied the game in the top of the third but Buffalo’s bats came alive, as the Bulls tallied 10 runs over the next three innings, highlighted by Mary Russell’s (Apalachin, NY/Owego) two-run homerun in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Kristen Gallipanni (Brewster, NY/Brewster) had an excellent offensive showing for Buffalo, finishing the game 2-for-2 with an RBI while Russell finished 2-for-4 with four RBIs. Visperas also recorded two hits in the game, while Barr, Wendy Sheehan (Orange, CA/El Modena/Bowling Green), Erin Zilka (Benicia, CA/Benicia) and Alex Bejarano (Chandler, AZ/Chandler) inked one hit each.
In the nightcap, Buffalo dropped a hard-fought 9-4 contest to Wright State. Barr pitched the complete game for the Bulls, finishing with five strikeouts. Barr also had a hot bat for Buffalo, knocking in three runs while Russell, Ashley Kanavy (Syracuse, NY/Westhill) and Candice Sheehan (Orange, CA/El Modena) each recorded a hit in the game. Buffalo will wrap-up its stint at the Frost Classic in Chattanooga on Sunday, as the Bulls are set to face Eastern Illinois at 9:45 am and UConn at 12:00 pm.
