Bulls to face Florida International on Sunday in championship round

MIAMI, FL - The University at Buffalo softball team split two games this afternoon on day two of the Florida International Tournament. The Bulls won their first game of the day over Furman, 6-2, but then dropped their second game to the host Golden Panthers, 5-1. With a 2-2 record thus far, the Bulls are the third seed in the five-team tournament and they will have a chance to avenge their loss to Florida International on Sunday when the two teams meet at 1 pm in the championship round. The winner of that game will advance to the championship game at 3 pm.

The Bulls jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning against Furman as juniors Allison Round (Markham, Ontario/Markham District), Marce Ross (Innisfil, Ontario/St. Peter's) and Breanne Nasti (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) each singled to load the bases. Sophomore Ann Magur (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) then reached on an error that sent Round and Ross across the plate, and sophomore Julie Hibner (Salem, OR/South Salem) later singled to center to drive in Nasti with the third run of the inning. Ross reached on a bunt single in the second inning and came around to score on a single by Magur, and the Bulls then put across their final two runs in the game in the seventh inning. Nasti walked, Magur followed with a double and senior Kelly Malone (Waterford, MI/Waterford Kettering) then singled to score both of them. Sophomore Stacey Evans (Collinsville, IL/Triad) had another strong game on the mound for the Bulls, going all seven innings and striking out seven while allowing nine hits. Nasti and Ross both finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored while Magur was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

Buffalo then dropped a 5-1 decision to Florida International in its second game of the day. Ross singled in the first and scored on an infield hit by Nasti, but the Bulls gave up two runs in the first, one in the second and two in the third to the Golden Panthers. Nasti finished the game with two hits in three at bats, making her 8-of-13 from the plate through Buffalo's first four games in the tournament. Senior Jessica Kensy (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) started on the mound for the Bulls and allowed two earned runs in 1.1 innings pitched. Senior Andrea Sage (Depew, NY/Depew) pitched the final 5.2 innings in the game, allowing just one earned run and striking out five.
