Buffalo beats North Texas, loses to Tennessee-Martin

CHATTANOOGA, TN - The University at Buffalo softball team finished Tennessee-Chattanooga's Frost Classic with a 2-4 record following a split in its final two games on Sunday. The Bulls took a 2-1 decision from North Texas in their first game of the day before losing to Tennessee-Martin in eight innings by the same 2-1 score. The Bulls are now 3-5 overall on the season.

Against North Texas (5-21), senior Breanne Nasti (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) hit a two-out single in the bottom of the first inning, stole second and then came around to score the game's first run on a double by senior Allison Round (Markham, Ontario/Markham District). Junior Julie Hibner (Salem, OR/South Salem) followed with a single to right center that scored Round and gave the Bulls a 2-0 lead. North Texas got one run in the top of the fifth on a solo home run by Maureen Kelley, but the Bulls were able to hold on for the 2-1 win behind the pitching of freshman Sophie Barstad (Canby, OR/Canby). Barstad went the distance and allowed just four hits to improve to 3-1 on the season.

In their final game of the tournament, Tennessee-Martin (7-5) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead over the Bulls after the first inning. Buffalo forced extra innings when Nasti drove in freshman Mary Russell (Apalachin, NY/Owego Free Academy) in the top of the sixth, but Tennessee-Martin shut the Bulls down in the top of the eighth before scoring the game-winning run in the bottom half of the inning for the 2-1 win. Junior Stacey Evans (Collinsville, IL/Triad) suffered the loss on the mound for the Bulls, pitching all 7.1 innings and allowing just one earned run while striking out eight.

The Bulls travel to Tempe, AZ next weekend for a three-team tournament at Arizona State. The Bulls will play both Arizona State and New Mexico State on Friday, March 5, Saturday, March 6 and Sunday, March 7 for a total of six games. Arizona State is currently ranked 18th in the NFCA/USA Today Top 25 poll and tied for 21st in the USA Softball/ESPN.com Top 25 poll.
