Bulls Open Frost Classic With Losses to Alabama, Wisconsin

Senior Breanne Nasti hits three-run home run against Crimson Tide

CHATTANOOGA, TN - The University at Buffalo softball team got back on the diamond this afternoon after a two-week layoff. The Bulls (1-3) opened play in Tennessee-Chattanooga's Frost Classic with a 6-3 loss to Alabama and a 4-2 loss to Wisconsin. Alabama is currently ranked ninth in the nation in both the NFCA/USA Today Top 25 and the USA Softball/ESPN.com Top 25 polls.

A solo home run by Alabama's Dominique Accetturo in the fourth inning got the Crimson Tide (10-3) on the board, and they then jumped out to a 6-0 lead with a five-run fifth inning, highlighted by a pinch-hit two-run home run by Staci Ramsey. The Bulls got on the board in the bottom of the sixth thanks to a three-run home run by senior Breanne Nasti (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) that scored junior Ann Magur (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott/Connecticut) and senior Marce Ross (Innisfil, Ontario/St. Peter's). Magur doubled and Ross followed with an infield single to set up Nasti's three-run homer. Junior Stacey Evans (Collinsville, IL/Triad) took the loss on the mound for the Bulls, allowing four earned runs in four innings before being relieved by sophomore transfer Theresa Gugger (Binghamton, NY/Susquehanna Valley/Oneonta State). Alabama's Jennifer Wright struck out 10 and allowed just three hits in the complete-game victory for the Crimson Tide.

Against Wisconsin, the Badgers (8-4) struck first with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning before the Bulls tied the game with two runs in the top of the fifth. Magur and Ross each had RBI singles in the inning to even the score. Wisconsin's Boo Gillette drove in a run with a two-out double in the bottom of the fifth and then came around to score on a single by Megan Missaggia to give Wisconsin the 4-2 win. Freshman pitcher Sophie Barstad (Canby, OR/Canby) allowed nine hits and two earned runs in five innings pitched, while Wisconsin's Katie Layne allowed just four hits and struck out six for the complete-game victory.

The Bulls face Tennessee Tech at 10 am and Tennessee-Chattanooga at 2:30 pm on Saturday in day two of the Frost Classic.
