Weekly ReleaseClick here for a PDF version of the release Bulls Open Season At ASU Tournament The University at Buffalo softball team kicked off its 2008 campaign at the Arizona State University Tournament over the weekend in Tempe, AZ. The Bulls finished 0-5 for the weekend while facing a handful of the top teams in the nation, including No. 2 Arizona State.
Day 1: Recap Buffalo fought hard but came up short in both games, falling to Iowa, 6-1 and dropping the nightcap to No.2 ASU, 12-3. Day 2: Recap The Bulls suffered losses in both games, falling 12-2 to Radford and 6-1 to the RedHawks. Day 3: Recap The Bulls were held scoreless, falling 10-0 to a hard-hitting Redbirds squad as ISU was able to gain a quick advantage, tacking eight runs on the board in the top of the second inning on five hits and two Buffalo errors. Hansen Has Hot Bat in AZ Senior shortstop Marcy Hansen (Claremont, CA/Claremont) had a stellar weekend at the plate at the ASU Tournament, returning to Buffalo with a team-leading .364 batting average (4-for-11) with two RBIs, two walks and an on-base percentage of .462, the highest on the team.
Rookie Right At Home Freshman Alex Bejarano (Chandler, AZ/Chandler) was right at home in the team’s season-opening tournament at ASU as the rookie hails from nearby Chandler, AZ. Bejarano, who started all five games at second base for the Bulls went 3-for-14 at the plate, with all three hits coming as doubles. Base-Stealing Bandits Buffalo base runners were perfect in stolen bases over the weekend, stealing six bases in six attempts. Senior Mary Russell (Apalachin, NY/Owego) and Kristen Gallipani (Brewster, NY/Brewster) were each 2-for-2 while Hansen and Dana Carter (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) stole one base each.
Free Ticket The Bulls’ focus at the plate was evident over the weekend, as Buffalo batters managed to draw 23 walks over the team’s five games. Gallipani and Erin Zilka (Benicia, CA/Benicia) drew four walks a piece while Stephanie Visperas (Newark, CA/Newark Memorial) and Wendy Sheehan (Orange, CA/El Modena) each grabbed three free tickets to first base. Next Up UB will travel to Chattanooga, TN to participate in a tournament hosted by UT Chattanooga. The Bulls will commence competition in Chattanooga on Friday, as Buffalo will square-off against Morehead State at 2:15 pm. |
