Competition Complete At Troy Cox Classic

Barr explodes offensively in college debut with five-RBI weekend

LAS CRUCES, NM - The University at Buffalo softball team was upended twice in its season-opening tournament, finishing the Troy Cox Classic hosted by New Mexico State University with an 0-5 record. Facing strong competition, the Bulls dropped the last two games of the tournament on Sunday, falling to the University of Texas-El Paso 5-0 and losing in the night-cap to Mid-American Conference foe Central Michigan, 10-1.

Despite not posting any wins on the weekend, the young Buffalo squad had an excellent initial showing at the plate, lead by freshman Sharon Barr’s (Coarsegold, CA/Yosemite Union) four-hit, five-RBI weekend over the tournament’s five games. In addition, Barr was also solid on the mound for the Bulls, as the rookie hurler made three appearances on the mound, starting two games and ending the weekend with a 4.15 ERA over 13.0 complete innings of work.

Against the Miners in the first game of the day, the Bulls were held scoreless, registering just one hit, a single to centerfield in the top of the fifth by sophomore Dana Carter (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South). Barr took the loss for UB, throwing five innings while UTEP pitcher Nicole Tunget pitched a complete game one-hitter with seven strikeouts.

In the Bulls’ second game of the day, a five-run fourth inning was too much for Buffalo to handle, as the Bulls fell to the Chippewas 10-1.

After gaining an early 1-0 lead on a RBI single from Barr that scored Carter, CMU battled back, scoring 10 runs over the next four innings. Buffalo was two-hit by Central Michigan pitcher Kari Seddon with both UB hits coming from Marcy Hansen (Claremont, CA/Claremont) and Barr in the bottom of the first inning. The Chippewas mounted a 10-hit offensive attack gathering five hits off of starting UB pitcher Sophie Barstad (Canby, OR/Canby) over 3.2 innings and five hits off of reliever Margo Schramm (Phoenix, AZ/Catalina Foothills/Iowa Lakes CC) in 1.1 innings on the mound.
