Softball Drops One To New Mexico State, 14-6

Freshman Barr stellar at the plate

LAS CRUCES, NM - The University at Buffalo softball fell to New Mexico State University in a single game at the Troy Cox Classic on Saturday, bested by the host-school 14-6. Despite the setback, freshman Sharon Barr (Coarsegold, CA/Yosemite Union) was perfect from the plate, going 2-for-2 with three RBIs on the night.

After giving up a run in the top of the first to the Aggies, the Bulls took a brief lead, as NMSU errors aided the Buffalo scoring drive. The Aggies came back to score three runs in the top of the second inning but Buffalo answered by scoring a duo of runs in the bottom of the third to even the score.

Marcy Hansen (Claremont, CA/Claremont) got the ball rolling for Buffalo, as the junior slapped a single to left field. Senior Sophie Barstad (Canby, OR/Canby) followed with a single of her own and Barr eventually jacked a RBI-single to center field to score Hansen. Dana Carter (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) picked up the other UB RBI in the inning, driving home pinch-runner Jaime Sheffler (Chittenango, NY/Chittenango Central) with an infield grounder.

The tie game was broken up in the top of the fifth, as NMSU scored 10 runs on six hits. In the bottom-half on the inning, Hansen was hit by a pitch, Barstad doubled and Barr followed with a two-RBI double of her own as the Bulls scored two more. The next two Buffalo hitters failed to reach the basepaths, however, and the Bulls took the eight-run loss.

Margo Schramm (Phoenix, AZ/Catalina Foothills/Iowa Lakes CC) took the loss on the mound for the Bulls, giving up seven earned runs on nine hits in 4.1 innings of work.

UB will conclude its season-opening tournament on Sunday, as the Bulls are scheduled to take on the University of Texas-El Paso at 11 am and MAC foe Central Michigan at 1:30 pm.
