Dartmouth Tourney Ends Fall Play
The University at Buffalo men's tennis team completed the fall portion of the schedule with Dartmouth’s Big Green Invite. There was no team scoring and UB netters were able to reach the quarterfinal rounds of both singles and doubles play.
Rockman Reaches Quarters in Singles and Doubles
Mike Rockman | Senior Mike Rockman (Toronto, Ontario/Thornlea) advanced into the quarterfinal round in both the singles and doubles competitions. Rockman, seeded eighth in the A flight, earned a first round bye and then defeated Antonio Oliver of Marist, 6-4, 6-1, to set up a quarterfinal confrontation with top-seeded Ashwin Kumar of Harvard. However, Rockman was eliminated by Kumar in a third-set super-tiebreaker. Rockman opened play with a 6-4 victory in the first set. After trailing 5-2 in the second set, he rallied to tie the set at 5-5 before Kumar took the final two games for a 7-5 decision, forcing the super-tiebreaker and defeating Rockman, 10-6.
Rockman also teamed with senior Albert Alant (Pretoria, South Africa/Niskayuna (NY)) to advance in the doubles quarterfinals. The UB duo knocked off Frank Algier and Antonio Oliver of Marist, 8-4, in the first round and then scored another 8-4 win over McGill's Vincent Menard and Troy Puddington. The UB duo was knocked out in the quarterfinals by the top seed, Harvard’s Kieran Burke and Kumar, 8-1. For Alant, the tournament was his first taste of action this season after sitting out much of the fall with a foot injury.
Stane, Hadisubroto Top Wins Lists as Winter Approaches
Octavian Stane | With his 2-1 record at the Dartmouth meet, sophomore Octavian Stane (Toronto, Ontario/Leaside) holds the team lead with 10 singles victories in the fall season. Stane defeated McGill’s Andrew Tervooren in the first round on Saturday before falling to fifth-seeded Kieran Burke of Harvard, 7-6 (5), 6-3, in the second round. He also picked up a consolation win over McGill’s Troy Puddington, 6-4, 6-0, on Sunday. Senior Yules Hadisubroto (Jakarta, Indonesia/SMUN 21) is the top doubles player for the Bulls with 10 victories this fall, including five with Mike Rockman and four with Nikesh Singh Panthlia (George Town, Malaysia/BMK Penang Free School).
