The University at Buffalo men’s tennis team completed the fall tournament portion of its schedule over the Halloween weekend with the Cornell Wicked Invitational. Sophomore Marcelo Mazzetto (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Carlos Magno) and freshman Kristof Custers (Balen, Belgium/European School of Mol) made their way through the back half of the draw to compete in the A and B singles consolation finals, respectively.

Mazzetto needed a third-set super-tiebreaker in a grueling match against Colgate's Martin MacIntyre in the consolation semifinals. Mazzetto won the first set in a 7-5 tiebreaker but lost the second set in similar fashion with a 7-2 tiebreaker loss, setting up the third set. In the super-tiebreaker, Mazzetto was able to regroup and get the best of MacIntyre with a 10-5 win. However, Mazzetto was unable to keep the momentum going in the final match as he fell to Marist's Loic Sessagesimi, 6-2, 6-3.

In the B consolation bracket, the Bulls had three players in the semifinal round as Custers defeated teammate Alexis Lluis (Mexico City, Mexico/Colegio Americano de Tabasco), 6-3, 6-1, to advance to the final against Binghamton's Gilbert Wong. Wong had defeated UB's Mitch Zenaty (Fairport, NY/Fairport) in the other semifinal, 6-0, 6-2. Wong went on to win the title with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Custers.

UB junior Kirill Kolomyts (Moscow, Russia/Moscow High School 155) scored three victories on Friday and Saturday to reach Sunday's semifinal round in the singles A flight. Kolomyts opened play with a win over Fairleigh Dickinson's Marko Jemersic, 7-6 (7), 6-2, then picked up a second round win in his first match on Saturday with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Duquesne's Zach Skorupka. Kolomyts later moved into the semifinal round as he downed Army's Jordan Girdley, 6-2, 6-3. He was eliminated in the semifinal round with a 6-3, 6-0 loss to Cornell's Jeremy Feldman.

In doubles action, the UB tandem of Kristof Custers and Octavian Stane (Toronto, Ontario/Leaside) moved into the semifinal round with two wins in the B flight. Custers and Stane opened with a tiebreaker win over Fairleigh Dickinson's Keiichiri Adachi and Diego Benavent, 9-8 (8). The UB tandem had an easier time in their Saturday match as they whitewashed Colgate's Sean Spellberg and Jamie Pellechi, 8-0. However, the UB pair was denied a spot in the finals as they fell in a tiebreaker, 9-8 (2), to Cornell's Conner Sherwood and Evan Bernstein.
