Kolomyts, Doubles Tandem Advance to Cornell Semifinals

ITHACA, NY – The first two days of play at the Cornell Wicked Invitational men's tennis tournament concluded Saturday with University at Buffalo players reaching the semifinal rounds in both singles and doubles play.

UB junior Kirill Kolomyts (Moscow, Russia/Moscow High School 155) scored three victories on Friday and Saturday to reach Sunday's semifinal round in the singles A flight. Kolomyts opened play with win over Fairleigh Dickinson's Marko Jemersic, 7-6 (7), 6-2. Kolomyts picked up a second round win in his first match on Saturday with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Duquesne's Zach Skorupka. Kolomyts later moved into the semifinal round as he downed Army's Jodan Girdley, 6-2, 6-3.

Octavian Stane

In doubles action, the UB tandem of Kristof Custers (Balen, Belguim/Eurpoean School of Mol) and Octavian Stane (Toronto, Ontario/Leaside) moved into the semifinal round on Sunday with two wins in the doubles B flight. Custers and Stane opened with a tiebreaker win over Fairleigh Dickinson's Adachi and Benavent, 9-8 (8). The UB tandem had an easier time in their Saturday match as they whitewashed Colgate's Sean Spellberg and Jamie Pellechi, 8-0.

Consolation play is also being contested in the singles brackets with four Bulls making the semifinals. In the A flight, Marcelo Mazzetto moved into the semifinals with victories over Marcus Von Nordheim of Marist and Markus Bolinder of Fairleigh Dickinson, following an opening round loss.

In the B flight, Custers will meet Alexis Lluis (Mexico City, Mexico/Colegio Americano de Tabasco) in one semifinal while UB's Mitch Zenaty (Fairport, NY/Fairport) is in the other semifinal in the top half of the draw. After a first round loss, Custers defeated Spellberg and then needed a super-tiebreaker to down FDU's Dominic Henry, 2-6, 6-1, 10-5. Lluis scored wins over Diego Benavent of FDU and Rhys Hobbs of Marist to make the semifinal. Zenaty scored wins over Andrew Clark of Army and Rafael Santiago of Duquesne to reach the semifinal round.

Play concludes on Sunday with singles matches at 9:00 am and doubles matches at 1:00 pm.
