Rockman, Doubles Squad Complete Successful Run at ITA Regionals
HANOVER, NH – Three University at Buffalo men’s tennis players completed successful runs before being eliminated at the ITA Northeast Regionals at Dartmouth College over the weekend. Junior Mike Rockman (Toronto, Ontario/Thornlea) and the doubles tandem of Yules Hadisubroto (Jakarta, Indonesia/SMUN 21) and Nikesh Singh Panthlia (George Town, Malaysia/BMK Penang Free School) represented the Bulls at the tournament which included the top players throughout the Northeast. In the singles draw, the unseeded Rockman opened with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Stony Brook’s Nihal Advani in the first round of the 128-player bracket. From there, Rockman faced seeded opponents in the rounds of 64 and 32. In the second round (the round of 64), Rockman defeated number 25 seed Andrew Lieu of Princeton by a 6-4, 7-5 margin. On Sunday morning, Rockman was bounced from the tournament but not without putting up a strong fight against sixth-seeded Mikhail Bekker of Pennsylvania, falling 6-2, 6-2. The top 32 players were seeded in the tournament with the remainder of field unseeded. "Mike fought with him for a while," said assistant coach Nick Zieziula. "It was a good match." Hadisubroto and Singh Panthlia opened doubles play with a victory. In the round of 64, the duo knocked off Fairfield’s Jonathan Fernando and Stephen Kouri, 8-2, to advance to the second round. The UB tandem was eliminated by the number six seed in the doubles draw, Penn State’s Adam Slagter and Mark Barry, by an 8-4 count in the round of 32. The full UB squad closes out the fall season next weekend at the Cornell Invitational, October 28-30. | ||||||||||||||||||
