Bulls Send Pair to ITA Regionals

The University at Buffalo had two entrants in the field as the top programs in the Northeast competed at the ITA Regional Championships, hosted by Yale University in New Haven. Junior Kirill Kolomyts (Moscow, Russia/Moscow High School 155) and sophomore Marcelo Mazzetto (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Carlos Magno) each picked up singles wins before falling in the second round. The pair also comprised UB’s doubles entry, scoring a first-round win prior to bowing out in the second round.

Kolomyts opened play on Friday with a straight-sets victory over Army's Sean Harris, 6-3, 6-1. On Saturday, Kolomyts fell to Pennsylvania's Hicham Laalej by a 6-4, 6-2 count. It was the second consecutive year that Kolomyts had reached the second round. In 2007, he defeated Dan Urban of Columbia, 6-3, 6-4, but was eliminated from the competition with his 6-1, 6-1 loss to second-seeded Peter Capkovic of Princeton.

In his first appearance at the regional championships, Mazzetto went to three sets in both of his matches. On Friday, he knocked off Urban, 6-1, 3-6, 6-4. It was the second straight year that Urban had been ousted by a UB player as Kolomyts achieved the feat in 2007. Mazzetto was eliminated on Saturday with his three-set loss to Sasha Ermakov of Harvard, 2-6, 6-1, 6-1

Duo Also Does Doubles

Kolomyts and Mazzetto also combined for doubles play picking up a first-round victory over Jeremy McClelland and Alex Mast of Duquesne, 8-6. On Saturday, the duo bowed out in the second round with an 8-6 loss to Connor Dawson and Calvin Bennett of Yale. The opening round win was the first for Kolomyts, who teamed with Nikesh Singh Panthlia last season, as the pair fell, 8-4, to Matt Gordon and Phil Stephens of Fairleigh Dickinson.
