Mazzetto, Kolomyts Compete at ITA Regional

The University at Buffalo sent a pair of squad members to the Wilson/ITA East Regional Championships at Dartmouth University’s Boss Tennis Center over the weekend. Junior Marcelo Mazzetto and senior Kirill Kolomyts represented the Bulls against some of the Northeast’s top competition.

An Early Win For Mazzetto

Marcelo Mazzetto opened play in the singles competition on Friday with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Fairfield’s Robert Ferrente in the main draw round of 128. However, Mazzetto was eliminated in the second round in a grueling three-set match against Penn’s Adam Schwartz on Saturday. Mazzetto dropped the opening set, 6-3, but forced a second-set tiebreaker, winning 7-1, to send the match into a third set. However, Schwartz took the final set, 6-2, to advance into Sunday’s round of 32. It was Mazzetto’s second appearance at the ITA meet. At last year’s competition in New Haven, CT, he scored a first-round win before falling in the second round. Both of his matches went three sets.

Quick Exit in Doubles

Mazzetto also paired with Kirill Kolomyts in doubles play as the UB duo dropped their opening match in the round of 64 to the Harvard duo of Alistair Felton and Andy Nguyen, 8-4. Mazzetto and Kolomyts combined for a win and a loss at last season’s ITA Regionals. The tournament was the third appearance of his career for Kolomyts. In his first appearance in 2007, he scored a first-round singles win before falling to the tournament’s second seed in the next round. He also reached the second round of the 2008 tournament in singles play.

A Nickell’s Worth

Head coach Lee Nickell commented on his team’s play at the conclusion of the tournament. “This weekend gave us another opportunity to compete against the best tennis players in the region,” said Nickell. “Marcelo competed well and although he came up a little short in the second round, showed some improvement from the beginning of the fall.”

Cornell Tournament Closes Out Fall Season

The Bulls close out the fall tournament season at the Cornell Invitational. Play begins in Ithaca on Friday, October 30 and concludes on Sunday, November 1. At last season’s tournament, Kolomyts reached the semifinals of the A singles bracket while Kristof Custers and Octavian Stane played in the semifinals of the B bracket in the doubles draw.
