WEST POINT, NY - The University at Buffalo men's tennis team completed the four-team Army Shootout on Sunday with mixed results. There was no team scoring in the matches. The weekend matches were held indoors at Army's Lichtenberg Tennis Center.

On Saturday, UB played singles matches against host Army, winning two of the six contests, were swept in seven singles and two doubles matches against Penn State. The Bulls returned Sunday to a doubles win against Army and three singles wins over Saint Joseph's.

In Saturday's opening singles contests against the homestanding Cadets, UB scored wins in the number two and five matches. UB sophomore Mike Rockman (Toronto, Ontario/Thornhill) scored a 7-5, 6-2 win over Michael Good at number two while junior Matt Kennedy (Mississaugua,Ontario/Erindale) registered a 6-1, 7-6 victory against David Collins. The remainder of the matches were won by Army in straight sets.

The Bulls also played singles and doubles matches against the Nittany Lions on Saturday, but were unable to pick up a victory. Rockman forced Penn State's Malcolm Scatliffe to a second-set tiebreaker, falling 7-5 in the extra game. Penn State won all 17 of its matches on Saturday with 10 wins over the Bulls and seven against Saint Joseph's in singles play.

Sunday opened with the Bulls' top doubles duo of Nick Zieziula (Hamburg, NY/St. Francis) and Kennedy defeating Army's Carl Fisher and John Houghton, 8-4.

The Bulls then faced Saint Joseph's in singles matches, winning the top three of the seven matches, all in three sets, with each UB player rallying from a set down. After dropping a tiebreaker in the opening set, Zieziula rallied to knock off Frank Velazquez, 6-7, 6-3, 6-4 at number one. Rockman knocked off Jimmy Holland, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, at number two. Number three Yules Hadisubroto (Jakarta, Indonesia/SMUN 21) needed to win a third-set tiebreaker to dispose of A.J. Garebedian. Hadisubroto scored a 7-5 win in the tiebreaker to take the match, 1-6, 6-3, 7-6.

However, the fatigue factor set in on the Bulls when they faced the Hawks in doubles competition to complete the tournament. UB was swept in all three matches but still refused to give up the fight. The number two and three matches turned into nailbiters as Rockman and Josh Liederman (Queens Village, NY/Benjamin Cardozo) fell in a tiebreaker, 9-8, to Holland and Antonio Aniello while at number three, Hadisubroto and Albert Alant (Pretoria, South Africa/Niskayuna (NY)) were defeated by Chris Spencer and Van Homer Pangilinan, 9-7.

UB will send several of its top players to the ITA Regional Championships in Blacksburg, VA. Play begins on Thursday.
