Men's Tennis Finishes Fall Season Undefeated

Bulls Sweep YSU Penguins, 7-0

BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo men's tennis program completed its fall schedule with a 7-0 win over Youngstown State University, Sunday at the UB Tennis Center. The win was the seventh of the season for the Bulls, but more importantly gave UB a perfect 7-0 fall record.

"This win is the culmination of our success," said Head Coach Russ Crispell. "All season long it has been teamwork, not individual successes which have led us to victory."

UB started off the day strong by sweeping all three doubles pairings. At first doubles, the tandem of freshman Fery Kasiman (Jakarta, Indonesia/Hilton Head Prep) and senior Budi Susanto (Bali, Indonesia/Hilton Head Prep) defeated Raul Pepino and Brandon Williams of YSU, 8-2. Next, at second doubles, the duo of juniors Sean Kelley (Gorham, NY/Marcus Whitman) and Justin Brtko (East Amherst, NY/Williamsville East) defeated Kevin Schaffert and Kyle Kestner, 8-2, to secure the doubles point for the Bulls. At third singles junior Matt Albert (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville East) and freshman Mike Goldberg (Old Bethpage, NY/Plainview) picked up the win by default.

The Bulls then moved on to singles competition, where they swept all six matches in two sets, never losing more than three games. At first singles, Susanto bested Pepino, 6-0, 6-0. Kasiman and Brtko picked up victories at second and third singles, 6-1, 6-0 and 6-3, 6-2 respectfully. Playing in their first singles competition of the season, Albert and Goldberg each picked up straight-set victories. At fourth singles Albert defeated Kestner 6-0, 6-2, while Goldberg defeated Jim Breunig, 6-0, 6-0 at fifth singles. At sixth singles, sophomore Brent Persia (Pembroke, NY/Pembroke), picked up the victory for UB by default.

This is the first time that one of Crispell's teams has gone undefeated

"This team has worked hard all season long," said Crispell. "Whether it was at practice or on the court in a match, these guys gave it their all."

This match concludes the Bull's fall schedule. Competition next resumes for UB on February 8-11, 2001, when the Bulls travel to Ithaca, NY for the Cornell Invitational.
