Bulls Fall to Binghamton, 5-2

Nick Zieziula and Josh Liederman pick up singles wins for UB men's tennis

BINGHAMTON, NY – The University at Buffalo men’s tennis team finished its weekend road trip with a 5-2 loss at Binghamton. The Bulls are now 1-1 in dual-meet play this season following Friday’s 7-0 win at Vermont and the loss to the Bearcats.

Three of the singles matches went to tiebreakers as did one of the doubles matches. In singles play, UB’s number three player Nick Zieziula (Hamburg, NY/St. Francis) rallied from a set down to defeat Binghamton’s Edwin Gerard, 2-6, 6-4, 11-9. Josh Liederman (Queens Village, NY/Benjamin Cardozo), at fourth singles, was UB's only other victor. He defeated Steve Spencer in straight sets, 6-0, 6-4.

Binghamton won the remaining singles matches. At number one, UB’s Mike Rockman (Toronto, Ontario/Thornhill) fell to Dan Hanegby, 6-3, 7-5. At number two, UB’s Randy Rocchio (East Amherst, NY/Williamsville East) forced tiebreakers in both sets but lost to Richemn Mourad, 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-4). UB’s fifth and sixth singles players, Rangga Prayudha (Jakarta, Indonesia/ESI International Academy) and Albert Alant (Pretoria, South Africa/Niskayuna (NY)) forced tiebreakers but both fell in their matches. Prayudha, at number five, fell to Brian O’Connor, 6-0, 5-7, 10-6, while Alant was defeated by Juan Garcia, 7-6 (7-2), 1-6, 10-0.

In doubles play, UB took the number three match, 8-6, with Alant and Prayudha downing O’Connor and Garcia. Binghamton won the number one match as Hanegby and Spencer decisioned Rocchio and Zieziula, 8-3. The doubles point was decided in the number two match. Rockman and Liederman went into a seven-point tiebreaker with Gerard and Mourad, dropping a 7-2 breaker to the Binghamton duo for the 9-8 final score.
