Bulls Spend Weekend in New England

The University at Buffalo men’s tennis team traveled to New England as they participated at the Dartmouth Invitational at the Boss Tennis Center in Hanover, NH. There was no team scoring at the meet that also featured Division I rivals Boston University and Marist as well as some tough Division III programs.

The Bulls picked up a flight championship title as sophomore Kristof Custers scored a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Dartmouth’s Chris Ho in Sunday’s final. In his first singles competition of the fall, Custers rolled to the Flight D singles title finishing with a 3-0 weekend record. Custers opened play with a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Spencer Lunghino of Middlebury on Friday and scored a “double bagel” 6-0, 6-0 win over Tony Sheng of Amherst in Saturday’s semifinal round. It was the second title for Custers during the fall. He teamed with Eric Rothstein to claim the White Flight doubles title at the Niagara Shootout earlier this season.

The Bulls had three other players reach their flight semifinals following opening round victories. Mitch Zenaty was also involved in a pair of super-tiebreakers in Flight E. Zenaty downed Amherst’s Scott London, 4-6, 6-4, 10-8, in the opener. On Saturday, he fell to Marcus VonNordheim of Marist, 4-6, 6-3, 10-8. In Sunday’s third-place match Zenaty knocked off Dylan Page of Williams, 6-0, 6-2. Kirill Kolomyts and George Tibil (Bucharest, Romania/Institut des Dames de Marie) finished fourth in their flights. In Flight A, Kolomyts defeated Nick Lebedoff of Williams, 6-3, 7-6 in his opener and fell to Dartmouth’s Curtis Roby, 6-2, 6-2, in the semifinals. Kolomyts finished the tournament with a 1-6, 6-4, 10-5 loss to Marist’s Christian Coley. Tibil downed Matt Himmelsbach of Marist in a super-tiebreaker, 6-3, 3-6, 10-8, in his Flight C opener. Tibil lost to Jeffrey Friedman of Dartmouth in another super-tiebreaker, 6-4, 4-6, 10-7 on Saturday and fell to Andrew Malizia of Dartmouth, 7-6 (3), 6-0 in Sunday’s third-place match.

A Nickell’s Worth

Following Sunday’s conclusion, head coach Lee Nickell commented on his team’s play. “We are proud of Kristof for winning his flight,” said Nickell. “We still need to work on fighting adversity and taking away some of the easy mistakes. All in all, it was a good weekend.”

Making the Return Trip

The Bulls return to Hanover for the ITA Regional Championships starting on October 15. At last season’s ITA competition, held at Yale University, Kirill Kolomyts and Marcelo Mazzetto both reached the second round of singles play and also paired to advance into the second round of doubles play.
